French Line Come Back

One of the most poignant documents in French maritime history, this poster was produced in 1982 as part of a commemorative series marking the career of the SS France. The two dates tell the whole story: the liner was launched at Saint-Nazaire on 11 May 1960 in the presence of General de Gaulle, and withdrawn from transatlantic service on 11 December 1974 following a crew strike protesting government subsidy cuts. Despite public campaigns to save her, the France was ultimately sold to Norwegian Cruise Line in 1979 and renamed Norway.

The composition pays deliberate homage to René Magritte's 1933 painting "The Human Condition": a wooden painter's easel stands on a terracotta floor beneath a stone arch opening onto the sea, with the France depicted on the canvas as if the ship were a painting within the painting — reality and representation perfectly merged. A dark iron ball rests on the floor, a Surrealist counterpoint echoing Magritte's enigmatic still lifes. "French Line" is inscribed in script at lower right, signed by the artist Ciganer below. The bold typography of "COME BACK" fills the lower panel with equal parts nostalgia and urgency.

This piece is sold unframed, carefully rolled and shipped in a rigid tube to ensure it arrives in pristine condition.
