Jennifer – "Le Lien Brisé"

A masterful example of French cinema poster art at its most dramatic. For this French release of Henry Cass's 1950 British drama, illustrator René Péron fills the composition with the ghostly, luminous face of young Janette Scott — auburn braids, blue eyes, lips touched with gold — while two tiny silhouetted figures hover mysteriously within her hair, hinting at the film's troubled narrative. The vivid turquoise and deep blue palette gives the portrait an almost surreal intensity, entirely characteristic of Péron's signature style.

The film — released in Britain as No Place for Jennifer — tells the story of Jennifer, a nine-year-old girl caught in the upheaval of her parents' divorce. Janette Scott, then a child star, carries the role with striking presence. The French title, Le Lien Brisé ("The Broken Bond"), perfectly captures the film's emotional weight.

René Péron (1904–1972) is one of the most celebrated French cinema poster artists of the 20th century. Trained at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris, he went on to sign over 2,000 film posters between 1925 and 1960 — including iconic works for King Kong (1933), L'Éternel Retour (1943) and Et Dieu créa la femme (1956). His 1950s style is especially prized: dreamlike compositions, dark backgrounds, and figures rendered in vivid, luminous colour. The Cinémathèque française holds some 120 of his works.
