By the time the Moulin Rouge commissioned René Gruau for its centenary revue Formidable, he had already spent half a century defining the visual language of Parisian elegance — from the couture salons of Dior to the stages of the great cabarets. His touch was immediately recognisable: economy of line, drama of silhouette, the confident slash of red against white and black that says Paris before a word is read.
This monumental two-panel street poster — over three metres tall — was designed to stop traffic on the boulevards of Montmartre. In the Gruau manner it achieves maximum effect with minimum means: a dancer in full flight, rendered in his trademark calligraphic line, against a field of pure red. The scale amplifies everything. Printed by Lithographie IDL Graphique in Paris, it is one of the largest and most commanding of Gruau's cabaret commissions.
This piece is sold unframed, carefully rolled and shipped in a rigid tube to ensure it arrives in pristine condition.
