In 1918, Alsace-Lorraine returned to France after nearly half a century under German rule. The Chemins de Fer d'Alsace et de Lorraine lost no time in making the point: the region was worth visiting, worth knowing, worth reclaiming as part of the French imagination. René Allenbach's travel poster series did exactly that — and few images carry more weight than this rooftop view of Strasbourg's Notre-Dame, its Gothic spire rising above the rust-red medieval city as if asserting its permanence above every political shift of history.
Allenbach was no ordinary affichist. Trained at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and at the Royal Academy in Leipzig, he had set up his atelier in Strasbourg by 1913 and made the city his own — later becoming a founding member of the Association des Artistes Indépendants d'Alsace and eventually director of the École des Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg. This poster is held in the permanent collection of the Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain de Strasbourg (inv. 55.002.0.36), a distinction that reflects both the poster's artistic quality and its significance to regional cultural heritage.
