Super-Chamonix

This original vintage poster promotes the cable car lifts of La Flégère and l'Index, serving the ski slopes at the foot of the Aiguilles Rouges, directly facing the Mont-Blanc massif. The photograph captures the historic two-person gondola of l'Index — its small, multicoloured cabins echoing the colourful ski sweaters of the skiers gliding down the slope below. This charming gondola was designed and installed in 1956 by the Grenoble-based firm Câbles et Monorails Mancini & Cie, and remained in service until 1977, when it was replaced by a detachable chairlift.

The photograph is signed by Roland Gay-Couttet, heir to a dynasty of Chamonix photographers active in the valley since the last quarter of the 19th century. A celebrated photographer and accomplished alpinist, Gay-Couttet specialised in high-mountain imagery. During the 1950s and 60s, his work was widely used to promote the Chamonix valley at a pivotal moment in poster history — when painted compositions were giving way to modern colour photography.

This copy is held in the collection of the Musée Alpin de Chamonix-Mont-Blanc (inventory no. A.221).

This piece is sold unframed, carefully rolled and shipped in a rigid tube to ensure it arrives in pristine condition.
