A rare and evocative document of French colonial commercial culture, this original chromolithograph advertises "Les 4 As" (The Aces), a cigarette brand produced and sold in French Indochina during the interwar period. The design is disarmingly direct: a pack of cigarettes, boldly rendered in orange and black, anchored by a playing card motif — the four aces, a hand that beats all others, and a naturally memorable brand name in a market crowded with both local manufacturers and international players.
The result is a seriously vintage graphic that feels as confident today as it did in the 1930s. A Vietnamese-language tagline reads approximately: "cigarettes that keep their fragrance to the last, at a modest price" — a pitch aimed squarely at the local consumer market.
The poster was printed by the Imprimerie Provençale Guiraud in Marseille, which served as the main gateway between metropolitan France and its overseas territories. It was natural for colonial advertisers to commission their graphic work from printers established in that city, where high-quality chromolithography workshops thrived on trade with the colonies.
This piece is sold unframed, carefully rolled and shipped in a rigid tube to ensure it arrives in pristine condition.
