Horst Antes was already famous for his "Kopffüßler" — those unsettling, iconic figures reduced to a head planted directly on legs — when Munich asked him to lend his vision to the 1972 Games. The result is characteristically spare and strange: an abstract silhouette hovers beside a podium marked 1–2–3, the geometry of competition distilled to its bare human essence. No flag, no crowd, no triumphant gesture. Just the figure and the numbers, in Antes's unmistakable language.
Part of the remarkable series commissioned by the Munich Organising Committee from artists including Hockney, Vasarely, Allen Jones and Peter Phillips, this poster embodies the Games' founding ambition — to represent sport and art as inseparable. Printed in Germany under the Edition Olympia 1972 GmbH programme, it remains one of the more sought-after designs in the series for its uncompromising graphic wit. Ed. Europa / 4 000 ex.
