One of the most culturally significant poster series of the 20th century, the Munich 1972 Olympics commissioned some of the era's leading artists to create official posters — among them R.B. Kitaj, the American-born figurative painter who was a central figure in the British Pop Art movement. His contribution depicts a swimmer in characteristic Kitaj style: expressive, richly textured, built from warm ochres and greens that convey both the power of the athlete and the heat of competition.
Printed by Olympia in 1971 in anticipation of the Games, this poster belongs to a celebrated collection that also included works by David Hockney, Josef Albers, and Alan Davie. The 1972 Munich Olympics, set against the tragedy of the September attacks, occupy a deeply resonant place in Olympic history, lending these images an additional weight beyond their considerable artistic merit.
